Why do I see the error "Salesforce Error: invalid cross reference id"?

If you see the following error message after submitting a Soapbox Engage app form, the issue is likely that the Campaign assigned to the page is no longer valid or has been deleted:

Salesforce Error: invalid cross reference id

To fix this problem, update the assigned Campaign in the affected Soapbox Engage app page to use a valid and existing Campaign.
