Preparing your Shop for in-person selling

updated

The Shop tab in Soapbox Engage Onsite is a point of sale over your existing Shop. Your team browses collections, adds products to a cart, and takes payment — so what your team can sell is decided by how your Shop is set up, not by anything in the app.

Collections are what your team browses

The app's opening Shop screen lists your collection pages. A collection your team needs at the merchandise table must exist as a published collection page on your site.

To make a collection available:

  1. Open the Menu Manager in the administrator.
  2. Confirm a menu item exists for the collection you want to sell from.
  3. Confirm the menu item is Published.
  4. Click Save.

Important: If your Shop has no published collection pages, the Shop tab in the app has nothing to show. This is the most common reason a team finds the Shop tab empty at an event.

Products must be published and in stock

A product appears in the app when it is published and available. Products that are unpublished, or out of stock where you track inventory, are not offered.

To review what will be sellable:

  1. Open the Shop app in the administrator.
  2. Click Products.
  3. Confirm the products you intend to sell are Published.
  4. Check the stock levels of anything you track inventory for.

Sales tax

In-person orders are taxed using your store's published tax regions, but because there is no billing address at a merchandise table, the region is worked out differently from an online order:

Your published tax regions What the app charges
None No sales tax
Exactly one That region's rate
Two or more The rate of the region matching your store's State/Prov/Reg Default Value, or no tax if that value is blank or does not match a published region

If your store has more than one published tax region, set the default state before your event so in-person orders are taxed the way you expect.

  1. Open the Shop app in the administrator.
  2. Click Configuration.
  3. For State/Prov/Reg Default Value, enter the state your event is held in.
  4. Click Save.

Important: If two or more tax regions are published and no default state is set, in-person orders are charged no sales tax at all. The app will not guess a rate.

A donation added to an in-person order is not taxed. Only the products are.

Shipping

In-person orders are never charged shipping. Merchandise is handed over at the table, so no shipping is applied whatever your online store's shipping rules say. Nothing needs configuring for this.

Receipts

Buyers are emailed a receipt when an in-person order completes, provided your team captures their email address at checkout.
