Allow donor to cover transaction fee as part of their donation

updated

With the Donations app, you have the option to display a checkbox at the bottom of the donation form that, if checked by the visitor, will add a percentage you specify to their donation. You may also set this checkbox to be checked by default when the form loads.

For instance, if you identify the percentage as 2% and the donor has elected $200 as their gift, they will be charged $204, if they check this option.

To enable this option, set the percentage to be applied, and customize the language of the text:

  1. Open the Donation form for which you wish to enable the cover the fee option
  2. Click the Payment tab
  3. In the Transaction Fee Coverage section, select Yes for Enable Transaction Fee Coverage
  4. For Checked by Default to the right of Enable Transaction Fee Coverage, tick the checkbox if you wish this option to be selected by default when the donation page loads
  5. For Transaction Fee Amount, enter the percentage you wish to add to the donation amount selected by the donor
  6. To view and customize the default language for the section title, checkbox label, and total label, Customize Headings & Labels and enter values, as you wish
  7. Click Save

After saving these changes, view the front end of your Donation form to confirm that the new checkbox is present.

What happens with your merchant and the donor's credit card statement when a donor opts to cover the transaction fee?

When a donor opts to cover the transaction fee and submits their donation, the amount charged to their credit card will be the initial donation amount plus the percentage. There will be no distinction made between the selected donation amount and the fee being covered with your merchant or the donor's credit card statement. In the above example, the amount listed will be $204.

What amount is saved to the Donations > Transactions view in Soapbox?

When a donor opts to cover the transaction fee and submits their donation, the amount charged to their credit card appears in the Amount column of the Donations > Transactions view in your Soapbox administrator. In the above example, the amount listed will be $204.

If you choose to export the transactions, the resulting CSV will contain an amount column as well as Transaction Fee Amount and Transaction Fee Percentage column. In the above example, the Transaction Fee Amount would be $4 and the Transaction Fee Percentage would be 2%.

What amount is saved to the Lead record and resulting Opportunity record Salesforce?

When a donor opts to cover the transaction fee and submits their donation, the amount charged to their credit card appears in the Donation Payment Amount field on the Lead and Amount field on the Opportunity (aka Donation) record. In the above example, the amount listed will be $204.

The Transaction Fee Amount Covered and Transaction Fee Percentage Covered fields on the Lead and resulting Opportunity would contain details of the fee coverage. In the above example, the Transaction Fee Amount Covered would be $4 and the Transaction Fee Percentage Covered would be 2%.

IMPORTANT: To have details of the transaction fee saved to Salesforce, you must manually create the necessary fields on both the Lead and Opportunity objects and update the Lead mapping accordingly. See this article for further details.
