Managing Auction Categories

updated

With the Auctions app, you can create, edit, copy, and reorder categories within an auction to organize items on the front-end homepage.

To manage categories for an auction:

  1. Open the Auctions Manager.
  2. Click the title of the auction you want to manage.
  3. Click the Categories tab.

Category fields

Field
Name What bidders see as the category heading and on the category filter.
Description Optional. Additional context for the category.
URL Slug The category's part of the web address. Leave it blank to have one generated from the name.
Published Set to No to take the category out of use.
Visible in Auction Set to No to keep the category out of the bidder-facing filters.

Published and Visible in Auction are not the same thing

These two are easy to confuse, and they do different jobs:

  • Published controls whether the category is in use at all.
  • Visible in Auction controls whether bidders are offered it as a way to browse.

Important: Neither setting hides the items in a category. A category that is not visible simply stops being offered as a filter on the auction home page — its items still appear in the main item grid. To hide an item, use the item's own Published or Visibility settings.

That distinction is the usual explanation when an administrator hides a category expecting its items to disappear and finds them still listed.

To edit a category

  1. Click the title of the category you want to edit.
  2. Update the category fields as needed.
  3. Click Save.

To copy a category

  1. In the Categories list, click the Copy action for the category you want to duplicate.
  2. A copy of the category is created and added to the list. Edit the copy as needed.
  3. Click Save.

To reorder categories

  1. In the Categories list, drag a category row to the desired position using the drag handle on the left side of the row.
  2. After arranging all categories in the desired order, click Save.

Note: The order you set for categories in the administrator is the order in which they appear on the auction homepage. Changes to category order take effect immediately after saving.
