An administrator can save a card to any user's account from the User Manager. This is the tidy-up path — useful when a bidder gives their card over the phone, or when something needs correcting after an event — rather than the way cards are normally collected.
To save a card to a user:
- In the administrator, go to Users.
- Open the user you want to save a card for.
- Scroll to Saved Payment Methods.
- Click Add Payment Card.
- Choose how to take the card:
- Use Terminal Reader: the person taps their card on a Stripe Terminal reader. If one reader is online for your Stripe account, it is used straight away. If several are online, choose one under Choose the reader to take the card on. Your choice is remembered until you close that browser tab, and Change reader switches it. When the card is saved you'll see Payment method saved; click Done.
- Enter Card Manually: enter the card details, Name on card, an optional Card nickname such as "Work Visa" to tell several cards apart, and the billing address starting with Country, then click Save Payment Method.
The card appears in the list with its brand, last four digits and expiry.
Note: If no reader is online, you'll see No terminal reader is online for this account. Switch a reader on, check it is connected, then try again. Choose Try Terminal Reader Again or Enter Card Manually Instead. A reader waits 90 seconds for a tap. If none comes, you'll see No card was tapped in time. No card was saved.
Note: The Saved Payment Methods section appears only when you are editing a user who already exists. It is not shown while creating a new user — save the account first, then reopen it.
What you can do from the list
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Set as Default | Marks the card as this user's default |
| Remove | Deletes the card from the user's account |
Removing a card here removes it everywhere, including from the user's own account page. If that card is the Auction Default for an auction you have not yet charged, set another one for that auction before removing it. See Managing Bidders.
Taking the card details safely
The card number is entered into a field hosted by Stripe, not by Soapbox, and is sent straight to Stripe. It never passes through your site and is not stored there. A card tapped on a reader goes straight to Stripe in the same way.
Even so, treat a card given over the phone the way your organization treats any other card detail: type it directly into the form and do not write it down first.
