With the Auctions app, you decide how much information someone has to give before they can bid. Each auction has its own Bidder Management settings, so a black-tie gala that charges cards on the night can ask for more than a community auction that settles in person.
Where the settings live
- Open the Auctions Manager.
- Click the title of the auction you want to edit.
- Open the Details tab and find the Bidder Management section.
- Set each option to Yes or No.
- Click Save.
The three settings
Require Mobile Phone — a bidder must give a mobile number before they can bid. Turn this on if you rely on outbid alerts and closing reminders by text, since a bidder with no number cannot receive them.
Require Payment Method — a bidder must save a card before they can bid. Turn this on when you intend to charge winners automatically at the end of the auction rather than collecting payment in person.
Require Shipping Address — a bidder must give an address before they can bid. Turn this on when items are posted rather than collected.
All three default to No, which lets someone register and start bidding with just a name and email address.
When bidders are asked
The settings are not checked at sign-up. Someone can create an account with only a name and email whatever these settings say.
They are checked when the bidder first tries to bid or buy. At that point, anything you have marked as required and they have not yet given is asked for in a single step before the bid can go through. A bidder who already has everything you require goes straight to bidding and never sees that step.
This means you can turn a setting on partway through an auction. Bidders who already meet it are unaffected; anyone who does not is asked the next time they bid.
What this does not change
These settings govern what a bidder must provide. They do not change what you can record on a bidder yourself from the Bidders tab, where you can always add a phone number, card or address on someone's behalf.
Turning Require Payment Method on has no effect unless your site takes payments through Stripe. If it does not, bidders cannot save a card at all — see the troubleshooting article on saving a payment method.
