With the Auctions app, participants sign in before they can place bids or make purchases. Someone who has not bid with your organization before creates an account; someone who has simply signs in.
Signing up
Visitors who do not yet have an account can click Sign Up on the auction home page. The form asks for a name, an email address, a password and, optionally, a mobile phone number with a country code.
Below the phone field is an opt-in checkbox:
I agree to receive SMS notifications (outbid alerts, auction closing reminders, etc)...
It is unchecked by default and is never required. Bidders who check it consent to receive text messages for the auction, and the date and time of the opt-in is recorded on their bidder record. For what those messages contain, see Auction notifications and alerts.
New users who register from an auction page are enrolled as bidders for that auction automatically — there is no separate registration step.
Signing in
Returning participants click Sign In. They are offered a password-free link sent to their email address, which is the default. Anyone who prefers a password can click Sign in with a password.
For how the email link works, how long it lasts and what the messages mean when one does not work, see Signing in with an email link.
Signing in from an auction page associates the bidder with that auction.
Bidding for the first time
Signing up does not necessarily mean a bidder is ready to bid. Each auction decides what a bidder must provide — a mobile phone, a saved payment method, a shipping address, or none of these.
The first time a bidder clicks Bid Now or Buy Now, anything still outstanding is asked for in a single step before the bid goes through. A bidder who already has everything the auction requires goes straight to bidding.
Someone who already has an account with your organization but has never bid in this auction is asked to become a bidder at the same point, keeping their existing account.
See Setting up bidder details for what a bidder sees, and Choosing what bidders must provide for how administrators set it.
After registering
Bidders receive a confirmation email with the auction's start time and a link to view the auction.
Registered bidders can manage their payment method, shipping address, mobile number and notification preferences from the My Preferences page in the account menu. For payment specifically, see Winning an item and completing payment.
