Winning an item and completing payment

updated

With the Auctions app, bidders can save a payment method to their auction profile before or during the auction. When an item closes and they are the highest bidder, payment is collected using that saved method. How and when charges are processed depends on how the auction administrator has configured the auction's payment timing.

Payment timing

The auction administrator configures when winning bids are charged:

  • After each item is won — payment is collected as each item closes and a winner is determined
  • After entire auction closes — all charges are collected together after the auction ends

Bidders do not control this setting. For a description of these options, see Creating and managing an Auction.

Adding a payment method

Bidders can add and manage their payment method for the auction from the My Preferences page. To access it, click the avatar menu after signing in and select My Preferences. The page subtitle confirms that settings apply only to the current auction.

The Payment Method for This Auction section displays any payment methods already saved to the bidder's profile, with the subtitle: "This payment method will be used for winning bids and purchases. You can change it anytime before checkout."

To add a new payment method, click Add Payment Method. A modal opens with the following options:

  • Credit card — enter card details using the hosted card fields (card number, expiration date, security code) along with a billing address (Street, City, State, Postal Code, Country)
  • Apple Pay — available on supported devices and browsers
  • Google Pay — available on supported devices and browsers

The modal can be dismissed by pressing the Escape key or clicking outside the modal.

Setting a default payment method

If multiple payment methods are saved, each card displays a Set as Default button. The default method is the one used when a charge is processed for a winning bid or purchase.

Winning notification

When a silent auction item closes and a bidder wins, they receive an SMS notification (if opted in) and an email with details about next steps. For a full list of notifications, see Auction notifications and alerts.
