With the Auctions app, bidders can sign in without a password. They enter their email address, receive a link, and clicking it signs them in. This is what bidders see first when they choose to sign in.
How it works for a bidder
- On the auction page, click Sign In.
- Enter the email address used with your organization before.
- Click the sign-in button. A message confirms the link has been sent.
- Open the email and click the link. It opens the auction, already signed in.
Bidders who would rather use a password can click Sign in with a password to switch to the usual username and password form.
What bidders should know about the link
It works once. Clicking it a second time will not sign anyone in again, which keeps a forwarded or leftover email from being reused.
It expires after 15 minutes. After that a new one has to be requested.
It returns to the right auction. The link opens the auction it was requested from, not a generic page.
If a bidder clicks a link that no longer works, the message tells them which it is:
- already been used — they have signed in with this link before; request a new one
- has expired — more than 15 minutes have passed; request a new one
- is invalid — the link was not one your site sent, or was altered in transit, perhaps by an email client that rewrote it
A bidder who is already signed in and clicks their own used link stays signed in and is told so, rather than being shown an error.
If the email does not arrive
Ask the bidder to check their spam folder first, as the message arrives from your site rather than from a personal address.
If it is genuinely absent, confirm the address they entered is the one on their bidder record. Open the auction's Bidders tab and check the email address there — a bidder who registered with a work address and requested a link with a personal one receives nothing, and is told nothing, because the site does not reveal whether an address is registered.
